Tips on how to prevent bedwetting accidents while traveling.

Family vacation or overnight visits with friends and relatives can often be fun but stressful, particularly when traveling with your little ones. If your child wets the bed--which can be an embarrassment for both you and your child--it can make your travel plans all the more challenging. Don't let the thought of soggy nights dampen happy time spent with the family! Here's how:

1. First, Have a Talk.

Explain to your child beforehand that he should not let his condition stop him from enjoying being on the road. Don't be afraid to let your host know up front about your child's condition so everyone is prepared to handle the situation efficiently without causing any anxiety.

2. Plan Ahead.

For hotel stays, call and find out if there is a laundry facility on site or within the vicinity. If washers and dryers are not available, consider bringing extra pajamas you plan to get rid of. If an accident happens, simply throw away the old PJs. To minimize unpleasant odor caused by bedwetting, keep odor-killing air freshener handy. For international travel, place the freshener in your checked luggage.

3. Waterproof the Bed.

Whether the family is at a hotel or at an overnight stay with relatives, protect the bed with a plastic mattress cover or reusable waterproof overlays. For camping trips, line the sleeping bag with a waterproof liner that is washable and dryable. Overlays and liners also come in disposable format.

4. Extra Protection.

For leak-free nights, encourage your child to put on protective, disposable undergarments. Most are designed look and feel like real undergarments.

And remember, your child can pick up on your emotions. Never make bedwetting a primary concern during a vacation and spoil the whole plan. Research shows most kids grow out of the bedwetting phase, so let your child know that it is not his fault he wets the bed, and that you know it is not his fault. As always, if you are concerned with your child's bedwetting condition, consult your pediatrician.
