Materials

  • Yellow pajamas or sweat suit
  • One 8 1/2- by 11-in. sheet white felt (at craft stores)
  • 1 1/2 yd. leopard-patterned fabric
  • One 4-in. square light-brown fake fu
  • Fabric glue
  • Scissors
  • Needle & thread
  • Child's headband
  • 2 pipe cleaners
  • Baby Jaguar Mask (optional)
Tip: Pajamas, sweat suits, or leggings and tops can be used for this costume. You can also find leopard print in a variety of fabrics, including inexpensive fleece and corduroy and more expensive fake fur. Check for remnants at your fabric store first.

Directions

  1. Step 1

Set the yellow pajama top flat on a worktable and place the white felt on top. This will be Baby Jaguar's chest. If needed, trim the felt so it covers just the front top half of the pajama top and does not overlap the arms. Use fabric glue to attach and allow it to dry.

  2. Step 2

Cut small (1- to 2-inch diameter) circles of leopard-patterned fabric and glue these to the front of the pajama pants and the pajama top. Allow to dry before attaching more circles to the back of the costume.

  3. Step 3

To make Baby Jaguar's tail, fold a piece of leopard print fabric one yard long by about 5 inches wide into a long rectangle. Fold the fabric so the back or reverse of the fabric is on the outside. Sew along the edge and pull the tube inside out. Fold and sew the light-brown fake fur swatch the same way, pull it inside out, and sew it to one end of the tail. Sew the other end of the tail to the back of the pajama bottoms.

  4. Step 4

To make jaguar ears, first use fabric glue to cover the headband with leopard print fabric. Cut four triangles of leopard print fabric and glue them together (finished sides on the outside) to make two triangles. Allow to dry and glue to the headband. For sturdier ears, place a piece of pipe cleaner between the two fabric triangles before gluing.

  5. Step 5

For a finishing touch, follow our <u><a href="/video/index.jhtml?videoid=32801">Baby Jaguar Face-Painting Instructions</a></u> or top your child's costume with a Baby Jaguar Mask.

Tip: Save the face painting until last.
