Boots & Tico's Lunch-Money Boxes

This miniature replica of Tico & Boots' off-to-school lunch boxes are just big enough to hold lunch money or trinkets. We made ours from matchboxes, but if you want them to be larger, try using large-size matchboxes.

Materials

• Small or large matchboxes with 'sliding' insert
• Craft paint in blue, purple, yellow, red, and brown
• Paintbrushes
• Black marker
• Twist ties or pipe cleaners
• Tape

Directions

1. Step 1: To Make Boots' Lunch Box

   Guide your child to paint the fronts of the outer box blue. Paint its sides and the outside of the insert yellow. Paint the interior of the insert red. After the paint is dry, have your child paint a banana on the outside and use the marker to trace it.

2. Step 2: To Make Tico's Lunch Box

   Guide your child to paint the front of the outer box purple. Paint its sides and the outside of the insert brown. Paint the interior of the insert red. After the paint is dry, have your child paint an acorn on the outside and use the marker to trace it.

3. Step 3: Create the Handle

   With a pushpin, poke two small holes in the top of the outer box. Poke the ends of the twist tie or pipe cleaner through either hole and bend the tips on the other side. Use tape to secure the tips in place.

4. Step 4: Pack Up For Lunch!

   Drop some change or other small treat in the box and then tuck the lunch-money box inside a pocket of your child's backpack!
