Diego's Infrared Binoculars

Equip your little animal rescuer with a pair of "infrared binoculars" like the one Diego uses in the Arctic to save the baby polar bears. A paper towel tube and a toilet paper roll are all you need to get started.

Materials

• 1 paper towel tube
• 1 toilet paper roll
• Craft knife (parents only)
• Diego Infrared Binoculars Printable
• Scissors
• Glue stick or tape
• Poster paints (optional)
• Stapler
• Red translucent plastic folder or red plastic cling wrap (as "infrared lenses")
• Letter-size yellow craft foam sheet
• Super glue (if you used plastic folder for the lenses)

Directions

1. Step 1

   Cut the paper towel tube and the toilet paper roll in half with a craft knife. (Parents should do this part.)

2. Step 2

   Print Diego Infrared Binoculars Printable. Cut out the printable wrapping paper and sticker of your child's choice.

3. Step 3

   Have your child wrap the two halves of the paper towel tube with the printable wrapping paper or paint the tubes and let dry.

4. Step 4

   Staple together the paper-towel tube halves, side by side at one end. At the other end, staple about one-inch deep inside the paper towel rolls. (The paper towel rolls will slip inside the toilet paper rolls, and the staple will help prevent the paper towel rolls from sliding in too far and pushing off the infrared lenses.)

5. Step 5

   If you are using a red translucent plastic folder for the infrared lenses, place the two halves of the toilet paper roll vertically on the red plastic folder and trace the circle shapes onto the folder. Cut out both circles from the plastic folder and set aside. If you are using red plastic cling wrap for the infared lenses, wrap around one end of each of the toilet paper rolls and secure with tape.

6. Step 6

   Cut out a strip of yellow craft foam 11 inches by 2 1/2 inches. Apply glue to one side and place the toilet paper rolls on top, wrapping the foam around the rolls. Cut away the additional length of foam and glue the overlapping ends together. Insert the paper towel rolls into the toilet roll halves.

7. Step 7

   Fold the Diego sticker tab upward, apply glue to the tab's top surface, and place the tab underneath the top of the yellow foam in the opposite end from the infrared lenses.

8. Step 8

   If you are using the red plastic folder for the infrared lenses, apply super glue to the front edges of the two toilet paper rolls. Carefully place the two pre-cut red plastic circles onto them. Wait until the glue has absolutely dried. (Parents should do this part.)
