My Own Discovery Box

For a gift that will last a lifetime, create a discovery box with your child's picture on top. The mementos of discoveries made outdoors will make this new--season after season!

Materials

• Inexpensive magnifying glass, available at discount retailers
• Photo of your child
• Inexpensive wooden box, available at crafts-supply stores
• Craft paint
• Paintbrushes

Directions

1. Step 1

   Take a picture of your child posing with the magnifying glass. Print it to fit the top of the box. (The one pictured is 4 by 6 inches).

2. Step 2

   Set out paintbrushes and colors so your child can paint the box.

3. Step 3

   Tape or glue the picture to the top of the box.

4. Step 4

   Accompany your child on a nature trip, to the beach, along a trail, or in the backyard, to collect "specimens." Don't forget the magnifying glass!

5. Step 5

   Once home, your child can fill the box with his or her prized discoveries, or even further adorn it with some of the best treasures!
