Dora's Purple Planet Solar System Mobile

Materials

• Polystyrene ball
• Purple glitter glue
• Purple glitter scrap paper
• Clear-drying craft glue
• Shimmery silver or white scrap paper
• Craft scissors
• Silver, mauve, and dark purple modeling clay
• Clear monofilament or thread
• Sewing needle (for parents only)

Directions

1. Step 1: Making the Purple Planet

   To make the purple planet, begin by glittering the polystyrene ball. As the glitter glue dries, cut a circle that is about 1 inch larger than the ball from the purple glitter paper. Cut out its center to make a ring; the hole should be slightly larger than the polystyrene ball. Slip it onto the ball and glue in place with clear-drying craft glue.

2. Step 2: Making the Galaxy

   To make the galaxy, cut an egg shape from the shimmery silver paper. Cut into it to create a coil.

3. Step 3: Making the Meteors

   To make the meteors, soften modeling clay and form into "rocks." Dent them with a pointed object, such as the lid of a pen, and roll on a textured surface, such as an actual stone. Let them dry overnight or until they harden slightly.

4. Step 4: Hang Them Up!

   Snip three lengths of the monofilament or thread and pass one through the Purple Planet ball, one through the center of the galaxy, and one through each of the meteors. With painter's tape, secure them to a ceiling or light fixture.
