Put those little town planners of yours to work! Hand out garden trowels and a big bag of mulch, and have kids create a mountain village or spread it out to mimic a rural countryside.

Materials

• 1 bag mulch, a sandbox, or a pile of gardensoil
• Trowels
• Tree branches
• Stones
• Small food boxes, such as tea boxes, baking soda boxes and toilet paper rolls
• Construction paper in various colors
• Clear tape or paint

Directions

1. Step 1

   Slash the side of the mulch bag and open it up. Provide trowels so kids can create "home sites" and roads.

2. Step 2

   Have kids collect tree or plant branches with leaves to use as trees and stones to use for roads.

3. Step 3

   After the town sites are laid out, have kids use construction paper to wrap empty tea boxes, baking soda boxes, and toilet paper rolls to create schools, barns, houses, garages and so on. A black market can be used to add details such as windows. Roofs can be made by cutting rectangles and bending them in half.

4. Step 4

   After they've placed the town buildings, encourage kids to drive toy cars and trucks from building to building. No doubt they'll take it from there.
