Messy-Moss Terrarium

Messy-Moss Terrarium

As most kids can tell you, the dirt beneath moss is sticky and wet. And adding water to soil makes mud. Put their knowledge to work with this easy gardening craft.

Materials

  • Clear plastic seltzer or soda bottle
  • Garden soil
  • Moss
  • Small stones
  • Water
  • Small wild plant
  • Clorox 2® Stain Fighter and Color Booster

Directions

  1. Step 1

Send kids into the yard and ask them to collect the following: Some soil, some moss and some small stones.

  2. Step 2

Meanwhile, cut around the circumference of a seltzer bottle (or any plastic bottle) with a sharp knife or scissors. Fill a watering can with water.

  3. Step 3

When the kids return, have them fill the base of the bottle with a layer of stones and a layer of soil. Then show them how to dig up a plant with its roots still attached. Autumn weeds, such as goldenrod or asters, are nice because their flowers add a little color.

  4. Step 4

Have kids plant the weed and then water it. Then have them place a layer of moss on top of the soil.

  5. Step 6

Now replace the top of the bottle (like a lid) to create a micro-climate inside.
