Pinecone Critters

A nature trail, park, or backyard has all the materials you'll need for these no-glue creatures. With a little imagination, your kids can create and name one-of-a-kind pinecone charracters!

Materials

• Pinecones, all sizes
• Buttons or plastic washers
• Pebbles, shells, or corks
• Wild flowers, leaves, or feathers
• Twigs or pine needle branches
• Wiggly eyes
• Driftwood

Directions

1. Step 1

   Go outside, dig around, and gather some of the decorations.

2. Step 2

   Invert your pinecone. Choose one that stands upright on its base.

3. Step 3

   For eyes, insert buttons, washers, pebbles, or blooms between the scales of the pinecone. For noses, try corks, shells, buttons, or small pinecones.

4. Step 4

   For arms, use twigs, broken branches, floral stems, or short pinecones. For wings, try shells, leaves, or branches.

5. Step 5

   For hats, use wild flowers, pointy leaves, feathers, or pine branches. For antennae, try fork-shaped twigs, pointy leaves, or short sticks.

6. Step 8

   For feet, try maple leaves, pine needles, or broken twigs. Then, for your stand, set your pinecone on a large branch, piece of driftwood, or stone. While waiting for everything to dry, let your child give his new pincecone pal a name!
