Recycle cans, plastic containers, and shoe boxes to make the perfect percussion instrument.

Materials

• Two large shoe boxes
• Colored construction paper or wrapping paper
• Small tin can
• Yogurt container
• Disposable pie tin
• Craft glue
• Ribbon
• Pencils (for drumming)
• Wire hanger
• Printable Fresh Beat Band Stickers

Directions

1. Step 1

   Turn one shoe box upside down and make sure your tin can and yogurt containers can fit on top of it, side by side.

2. Step 2

   Use craft glue to cover the shoe box with construction paper. If you don't have any construction paper on hand, try using wrapping paper.

3. Step 3

   Cover the cut end of the tin can with masking tape, electrical tape, or colored reflective tape from an office-supply store. Cover the tin can and yogurt container with stickers or construction paper. Then glue them to the shoe box.

4. Step 4

   Decorate your shoe boxes with Printable Fresh-Beat Band borders, stickers, and ribbon. Get creative!

5. Step 5

   Bend the wire hanger into a diamond shape, and bend the tip of the hook up in a V-shape (Parents will want to do this part).

6. Step 6

   Cut an 8-inch piece of ribbon and tie it to the tip of the hooked end of the hanger. Using a scissor, cut a small hole in the center of the pie tin. Feed the ribbon through the hole and tie a small knot. (Parents should do this part).

7. Step 7

   Tape the wire hanger to the side of the show box, enabling the pie tin to hang down like a cymbal.

8. Step 8

   Allow 30 minutes of drying time, and then grab your pencils and drum away!
