Materials

• Small, round, clear glass jars (such as dipping sauce jars)
• Kai-lan Hanging Lanterns Art
• Sicssors
• 1 yd. yarn or ribbon that's no wider than 1/8 inches
• Battery-operated LED lights
• Tassels (optional)
• Tape (optional)

Directions

1. Preparation

Find a few empty, round, clear glass jars around your house. Make sure the opening is big enough for the LED lights you bought. Remove any labels and wash the jars clean. Use adhesive remover if necessary. Wipe them dry.

2. Making the lantern

Print and cut out Kai-lan Hanging Lanterns Art. Have your child pick an image and cut it to the height of the jar's inside space (below the jar's "neck"). Roll up the image (image on the outside) and place it inside the jar. The paper will adhere to the inner wall by itself without glue. If the image is slightly taller than the inside space and doesn't adhere to the inner wall, cut it shorter until it fits.

3. Creating the handle

Wrap the yarn or ribbon twice around the bottom of the jar's "neck" and make a knot anywhere along the circle. Pull the two loose ends together across the jar's top opening and thread them through underneath the wrapping yarn on the other side of the knot. Pull the yarn back to achieve an ideal length of your handle, make another knot to fix the handle length, using the two loose ends as one strand. Cut away the additional yarn. Note: Do not try use the handle before the cap is twisted on. The cap will block the wrapping yarn from slipping off.

4. Light up the lantern and put on a lantern show!

Place the light in and turn on the light. Twist the cap on and hang it up. Make more to put on a lantern show!

5. Options

Option 1: Tape a tassel to the bottom of the jar to further resemble a lantern. Option 2: For jars that have a logo on top of the cap, use the leftover cutout of your lantern art and wrap it around the cap.
