Kai-lan Jade Necklaces

Turn sculpting clay into a special keepsake by making these two interlocking necklaces. They're just like the ones Kai-lan and her great aunt Gu Nai Nai wear! Keep one for yourself and give the other to someone who makes your heart feel super happy!

Materials

• Kai-lan's Jade Necklaces Template
• 1 two-oz. block translucent sculpting clay (optional)
• 1 two-oz. block green sculpting clay
• Clay rolling pin, can, or any cylinder-shaped object
• Non-serrated plastic knife
• Glass baking pan
• Red strings or yarn

Directions

1. Step 1: Create the Templates

   Print the templates and cut out the shapes for Gu Nai Nai's necklace and Kai-lan's necklace.

2. Step 2: Prepare the Clay

   To make sculpting clay appear to be jade, add a pinch of green sculpting clay to a half block of translucent sculpting clay. Keep kneading until the color is almost even but still contains tiny marbles of green. Roll it into a ball, flatten it, and then use the rolling pin to roll out the piece until it's big enough to cover the heart shape.

3. Step 3: Cut Out Gu Nai Nai's Necklace

   Place the heart shape on top of the clay rollout, cut around the shape with a plastic knife, and peel away the edges. <br /><br /> Place the circle shape on top of the clay heart, making sure you leave even space to the top notch and the bottom of the heart shape, and cut out the circle from the clay. Save the cutout for Kai-lan's necklace.

4. Step 4: Cut Out Kai-lan's Necklace

   Place the big circle on top of the clay circle left over from Gu Nai Nai's necklace. Cut around the paper circle and trim the edges. <br /><br /> Use the small paper circle to cut out a small circle from the clay circle's center. Now you have a ring.

5. Step 5: Bake the Necklaces

   Bake both "jade" pieces--the heart with a hollow circle and the ring--in a glass baking pan at 275&#176;F for 30 minutes and let cool. (Parents should do this part.)

6. Step 6: Final Touches

   To complete the two necklaces, wrap red strings or yarn through the pendant and knot at the top.
