Materials

  • 3 ft. (width) by 4 feet (length) piece of red felt (cut to fit a typical doorframe in your house)
  • Fabric glue
  • Fabric scissors
  • 2-yd.-wide purple grosgrain ribbon
  • 4 aqua pom-poms
  • Backyardigans pirate scene templates
  • Backyardigans pirate puppets
  • Small yellow, white, black, and blue felt swatches
  • Suspension rod to fit doorframe (from local hardware store)
  • 1 package of self-adhesive tab sets
Tip: Felt is available by the yard. For the least expensive version, use a synthetic, not wool, version of the fabric.

Directions

  1. Step 1: Create the tabs for the suspension rod

To create the tabs at the top, fold over the top edge of the red felt rectangle about 2 inches. At intervals, cut out squares to create the tabs. Secure in place with fabric glue.

  2. Step 2: Create the theater

Using a straight edge and a pen, mark an 11- by 17-inch opening at the center of the felt. (If you've adjusted the width of the fabric piece, scale to fit.) Snipping the purple ribbon to the appropriate lengths, outline the opening by gluing ribbon around its perimeter. At each corner of the opening, glue on aqua pom-pom.

  3. Step 3: Set the scene with attachable felt pieces and puppets

Create the felt set pieces using the the printables provided. Attach using the self-adhesive tab sets for easy on/off set changes. And finally, create the puppets using the printables provided.

  4. Step 4: Hang it up and put on a show!

Set up your theater in a doorway by threading the tabs onto the suspension rod. Hang the suspension rod in a doorway at an appropriate height for your little ones to put on a show.
