Materials

  • Card stock or cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Wool fleece and yarn in yellow
  • Yarn or tapestry needle
  • Black, pink, brown, orange, pink and green felt
  • Ming-Ming Doll Template
  • Fabric glue

Directions

  1. Step 1

From the card stock, cut four donut circles with holes in the center. (They should look like donuts.) Make two of them to about 3.5 inches in diameter. Make the other two about 2 inches in diameter. In the center of all circles, cut out a hole. You’ll have what looks like four donuts.

  2. Step 2

Stack the two large circles, aligning their center holes. Cut several long pieces of yarn and fleece in equal lengths. Starting in the center hole, wrap the yarn and fleece over the outer ring of the donut and then back through the ring again. Repeat this until you've gone all the way around the ring and your cardboard donut is completely covered. When your yarn and fleece run out, just add in another length. You don't need to knot it. Just continue. You can trim the pom-pom to look neat when you are finished.

  3. Step 3

Snip a 6-inch piece of yarn. Set aside. Slip the tip of your scissors in through the outer edge of the donut and begin to snip around the circumference. Be sure to hold the donuts together firmly so you don't lose any of yarn. Pass the snipped length of yarn in between the two donut pieces, wrapping it around the "hole." Pull tightly and then tie in a double knot. Remove both donut pieces. You will have a tail of yarn left over. Do not snip it. You need it for sewing.

  4. Step 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 with the two smaller donut pieces.

  5. Step 5

Cut one of the donut pieces in half. Then stack the two half-circles. Repeat as for the pom-poms. This will make elongated "pompoms" that you can use for wings. Don't worry if they look "bulky" or awkward in shape. You will trim them down after you have stitched the wings to the body.

  6. Step 6

Using the tail of yarn left from tying the large pom-pom, stitch the large pom-pom to the small one. Then stitch one wing to each side of the large pom-pom.

  7. Step 7

With your scissors, trim the small pom-pom to narrow the forehead and exaggerate the cheeks shape. On the large pom-pom, trim away the area around the neck. On the wings, snip as much as you can to create an elongated shape with tips at the end.

  8. Step 8

Print and cut out the templates for the facial features, hat, goggles, cape, and feet. Trace them onto the felt pieces and cut them out. For the legs, cut out two rectangles. Roll them into tubes and glue them to create legs. For the beak, stack one piece on top of the other and glue at the top only so that Ming-Ming's beak can open. For the hat, cut a slit as indicated on the template. Fold the felt over itself to create a slight "cone" shape and glue. Cut out and add the hat flaps and goggles. Cut out the cape, wrap it around Ming-Ming's neck, and glue the ends together. Glue on the hat, then the goggle. Glue on the beak and eyes. Glue one foot to each leg and then glue the legs to the body in a sitting position.

  9. Step 9

To shape Ming-Ming, fluff the pompoms and adjust the felt pieces as needed.
