Ni Hao, Kai-lan No-Sew Fleece Hats

Materials

• 1/4-yd. fleece in your child's favorite color
• Felt squares of various colors (see individual templates for details)
• Fabric scissors
• Fabric glue
• Kai-lan Hat Template: Sun
• Kai-lan Hat Template: Hoho
• Kai-lan Hat Template: Rintoo
• Kai-lan Hat Template: Tolee
• Fine-tip indelible markers or fabric paints (optional)

Directions

1. Step 1

   Cut the fleece into a rectangle that measures about 13 inches high by the width of your child's head plus 1 inch.

2. Step 2

   Right sides together, fold the fleece in half, aligning the two 13-inch edges. Glue along the inside of these edges, stopping about 4 inches from one end. Dry thoroughly.

3. Step 3

   Just below the glue area, snip in (perpendicular to the seam) about 1/2 inch deep.

4. Step 4

   Turn the hat right side out. Overlap the two unglued edges. Glue in place. Let dry.

5. Step 5

   Roll up the hat from the bottom (about three times) to create a rolled cuff.

6. Step 6

   Print and cut out the hat template of your kid's favorite character.

7. Step 7

   Trace the face pieces and cut them from the felt. For tiny shapes, if it's easier for you, draw them onto the hat later with the fine-tip markers or fabric paints.

8. Step 8

   When the hat is dry, place the seam at the back and glue the character face pieces onto the area above the rolled cuff.

9. Step 9

   Cut a short, narrow strip from the fleece. Gather the top of the hat like a ponytail, and use the strip to tie it tight. Knot. Snip ends close to the knot.

10. Step 10

    Fringe the top of the hat above the tie.
