Materials

  • Men's undershirt
  • Olivia's Designer Stencils
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Fabric paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Decoration accessories
  • Fabric glue
  • Aluminum foil (optional)
  • Ribbon (optional)
Tip: Rather than spend at the craft supply store, let your child help you look through the house for the perfect "designer" decorations. Perhaps Dad has an old undershirt he's looking to retire. There are sure to be extra buttons, fabric scraps, or other great finds at the back of your closet or the bottom of your drawers. You can even use newspaper or magazine clippings. It's a great opportunity to get creative and imaginative and save some money.

Directions

  1. Step 1

Print Olivia's Designer Stencils onto paper or cardstock. Use scissors or a craft knife to cut out the black stencil shapes. This step should be completed by an adult.

  2. Step 2

Set up space on a table or the floor to lay out the undershirt for painting and decorating. When kids are painting, it's always a good idea to put down newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to prevent stains.

Help your child use the stencils to paint on the shapes of their choice. Encourage them to make their own choices and be sure to provide plenty of positive encouragement.

  3. Step 3

While the paint is drying, you and your child can start thinking what else you would like to add to your glamorous gown. There are plenty of household items that can make great decorations: buttons, fabric swatches from discarded or damaged clothing, magazine clippings, stickers, ribbon, or scrap trim are just a few ideas.

Once the paint is dry, use fabric glue to affix your decorative accents.

  4. Step 4

You can add a decorative trim to the sleeves or to the bottom of the shirt. We used ribbon along the shirt sleeves to create a trim. You could also use tissue paper, newspaper, or even aluminum foil. Attach any trim or ruffle using fabric glue. Let the glue dry.

  5. Step 5

Have your child try on their new designer dress. For a better fit, you may want to use ribbon or yarn to create a belt or a sash. Now it's time to show off. Don't forget to have the camera ready!

Tip: This craft is all about exercising your child's own creativity. Don't let your own aesthetic or fashion sense get in the way of your child's choices. The special time together is much more important than the style.
