Pablo Costume

Create this easy Pablo costume with a pair of one-piece pajamas and a baseball cap. Clever use of simple sewing accessories and glue do the rest.

Materials

• Yellow fleece
• Fabric glue
• Fabric shears
• Blue footed one-piece pajamas
• Blue t-shirt at least two sizes larger than the pajamas
• Spray starch (optional)
• Heavy cardstock or thin cardboard
• Hole punch
• Wide sewing elastic
• Blue felt
• Blue or red baseball cap
• Propeller from a dime-store balsa wood airplane kit
• Floral wire
• Blue, red, and yellow felt
• Bright yellow cardstock
• Plain white paper
• Black marker
• Blue paper plate
• Craft knife
• Sewing elastic for tying on the mask
• Craft glue
• Blue mittens
• Polyester stuffing

Directions

1. Step 1: Make the body

   For the tummy, cut a very large oval out of yellow fleece. Glue it right over the zipper onto the pajamas. Let dry. Once it is dry, use your scissors to cut down along the zipper, then glue the yellow fleece along the edges of the slipper.

2. Step 2: Make the vest

   Cut the blue t-shirt vertically, up its center. Then cut the open "flaps" into a curved vest shape. Turn over the t-shirt and cut an inverted V-shape at the center back to create "tails." Hang the pajamas on a hanger, slip the vest over the top, and then use your scissors to trim the vest until it's the shape you like. Once you are satisfied with the vest shape, you can press it with spray starch to make it stiffer. This step is optional.

3. Step 3: Make the bow tie

   Cut a large bow tie shape from the card stock. Snip two small holes in the center of the card stock bow tie and slip a length (about 8 inches) of sewing elastic through to create a stretchy tie. Then use the card stock bow tie shape as a template to cut the same shape from the blue felt. Glue the blue felt to the card stock (the side that does NOT have the elastic ends coming out) and let dry. Set aside.

4. Step 4: Make the beanie

   Cut the visor off a baseball cap. Continue to trim the base of the hat until it's a suitable size for a beanie. From the airplane kit, remove the propeller. Use the ends of the scissors to poke a small hole in the top of the beanie. Slip the propeller through. To keep it elevated and secure, wrap its base with floral wire until it stands up on its own. From the felt, cut triangles in red, blue, and yellow and glue them at intervals to the beanie. Let dry.

5. Step 5: Make the mask

   Cut a large diamond shape from the yellow card stock. Fold it crosswise in half, then crease it again just below that fold. Glue it to the center of the plate. <span class="hdr2">9.</span> On white paper, draw two large eyes with the black marker. Cut them out and glue them to the plate.<br /><br /> <span class="hdr2">10.</span> With a craft knife, cut holes in the eyes and a small breathing hole in the nose area.<br /><br /> <span class="hdr2">11.</span> Before punching holes in the plate to create the mask, hold it up to your child's face. The holes for the elastic need to go barely above your child's ear level. Mark this, then punch a hole on each side of the mask. Slip a piece of stretchy elastic at both sides and tie at the back of the child's head.

6. Step 6: Make the hands

   Dress your child in the pajamas, stuffing the belly and rear as much as possible before adding the vest, beanie, and mask. Slip the mittens over the hands.
