Materials

  • Pablo No-Sew Scarf template
  • Fleece scarf or 1/2-yd. fleece fabric
  • Fusible interfacing (optional)
  • Small fleece swatches in dark blue, yellow, white, red, and light blue
  • Straight pins
  • Fabric glue (such as Sobo)
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Puffy paint pens (assorted colors)
Tip: Fleece comes in several weights. Choose one that isn't too thick.

Directions

  1. Step 1: Get ready

Start with a store-bought fleece scarf or make your own by cutting a 48- to 54-inch piece of fleece about 6 inches wide. For a thicker scarf, iron in fusible interfacing (such as Wonder Under) between two pieces of fleece or stitch them together on a sewing machine.

  2. Step 2: Cut out the fleece pieces

Print out the template, cut out all the shapes, and then, following the template, trace the shapes onto their respective pieces of fleece.

  3. Step 3: Attach the pieces to the scarf

Arrange the fleece shapes at the ends of the scarf and pin them in place. Glue the shapes down and let the glue dry for about two hours.

  4. Step 4: Create a border

You can create a colorful border for the scarves by cutting out two 6- by 2-inch pieces of fleece, folding them in half lengthwise, and pressing them with a hot iron. Slip one end of the scarf into one of the folded rectangles and glue it in place. Do the same at the opposite end of the scarf.

  5. Step 5: Add decorative features

Use puffy paint pens to create the facial features, and to outline the shapes and trim the ends of the scarves, if desired. You can use embroidery floss or pearl cotton to add trim instead; simply stitch two rows of thread along the bottom of the scarf using a long running stitch.

  6. Step 6: Complete the scarf

Press the scarf lightly with an iron on the low setting. For best results, follow the ironing directions for the 3-D fabric paint or wait a couple of days before ironing the scarf.

Tip: Use glue sparingly so it won't leave dark marks when it dries.
