Tico's Vest Craft

Celebrate off-to-school with this easy-to-make replica of Tico's vest. Use a t-shirt that's one to two sizes larger than your child normally wears.

Materials

• Yellow t-shirt
• Stiff cardboard
• Masking tape
• Fabric paint in blue, green, aqua, light aqua, orange, and pink
• Wide bristle paintbrushes
• Fabric scissors (parents only)
• Fabric glue

Directions

1. Step 1

   Slip the cardboard inside the yellow t-shirt so that the paint can't seep through as you paint.

2. Step 2

   Apply the masking tape, placing it at 1- to 2-inch intervals on the front of the shirt only.

3. Step 3

   Beginning with your first color, paint between the masking tape. When it's time for a yellow stripe, there's no need to paint since the yellow t-shirt will serve as the stripe. Continue until all your stripes have been painted. Let dry.

4. Step 4

   Remove the masking tape. Flip the t-shirt over and paint the stripes on the reverse side. Let dry.

5. Step 5

   After removing the masking tape, cut the t-shirt open at the front. Cut off the ribbed collar. Then cut the neckline into a v-neck shape. Cut a curve into the hemline at the front. Cut off the sleeves.

6. Step 6

   Using the sleeves, cut two rounded pocket shapes. Paint them orange. Let dry.

7. Step 7

   Glue the orange pockets to the front of the vest. Let dry.
