Materials

  • Colored tissue-paper squares
  • Scissors
  • Green pipe cleaners
  • Green florist tape (optional)
  • Colored markers (optional)
  • Pinking shears or other decorative scissors (optional)
Tip: Layering paper in two different colors will give your flowers a more realistic appearance.

Directions

  1. Step 1

Stack two or three squares of tissue paper on top of each other on a flat work surface. You can cut the tissue into different sizes or use squares of the same size.

  2. Step 2

Show your child how to fold the tissue back and forth (accordion style) like a paper fan.

  3. Step 3

Wrap the end of a pipe cleaner around the center of the folded tissue to hold it tightly and to make a stem for the flower. Older kids can wrap green florist tape around the pipe-cleaner stem.

  4. Step 4

Gently pull open the tissue paper to make the flower bloom.

  5. Step 5

Encourage kids to experiment by stacking two colors of tissue paper together and decorating the tissue paper with colored markers before folding. After the paper had been folded, cut the ends with pinking shears or decorative scissors (available at craft shops in the scrapbooking section).

Tip: These flowers are a great gift for grandparents and teachers.
