Materials

Directions

  1. Step 1

Print out the Uncle Sam Hat Template and Uncle Sam Hat Band. Choose either the full-color printables or the black-and-white printables that kids can color in themselves.

  2. Step 2

Use the red crayon to color the paper plate. We used a white paper plate and colored just the top of the plate using the crayon, but you could use a red paper plate instead.

  3. Step 3

Help kids cut out the templates. Use sticky tape to secure the two hat templates together into a cylinder. Place the cylinder over the center of the paper plate (bottom-side up) and trace the cylinder onto the plate with a pencil. (Parents may want to do this part.)

  4. Step 4

Parents can use the scissors to poke a hole into the center of the paper plate to get kids started, and then kids can cut out the circle in the middle of the paper plate.

  5. Step 5

Slide the cylinder of paper through the circular hole from the top. Push the cylinder about 1 inch down through the plate. Place a thin bead of glue along the bottom edge of the paper cylinder and slide the cylinder back up until the bottom of the paper is flush with the bottom of the plate. Allow the glue to dry.

  6. Step 6

Use glue or sticky tape to attach the hat band to the base of the cylinder. When you're done, your child is ready to march in a July 4 parade or give a tip of the hat to the U.S.A.!
