Wubbzy No-Sew Garden Apron

Encourage your kids to get dirty with this no-sew garden apron. The three pockets hold tools or seeds and the waist is adjustable.

Materials

• Cotton duck cloth or canvas in green
• Sewing pins or sturdy tape
• Self-adhesive double-sided fabric tape (available at fabric-supply stores)
• Chalk or pencil
• Four 3/8-in. grommets and grommet tool (options provided below)
• 1-yd. thick cotton cord, twill tape, or any other sturdy trim for the drawstring
• Green marker for faux stitching detail
• Iron-on transfer paper
• Wubbzy iron-on designs

Directions

1. Step 1: Create apron front

   Cut an 18-inch-wide by 11-inch-high rectangle from the green fabric. To create the pocket flap, have kids fold up the bottom edge 5 inches. They can crease along the fold with their finger. Pin or tape in place.

2. Step 2: Create the waistband

   Turn the rectangle over, and along the top where the grommets will go, have kids fold down about an inch. Crease the fold with fingers. Pin or tape in place.

3. Step 3: Create hems to prevent fraying

   To prevent the sides of the apron from fraying, help kids fold a 1-inch hem down each side. Now, secure these folds in place with the double-sided tape.

4. Step 4: To add grommets

   With the chalk or a pencil, mark out the placement for the four grommets (or X-shaped slits if you're making the apron that way). The first and last grommets should be about 1 1/2 inches in from the edges of the apron. Place the other two, equally spaced, in between. Have kids use an under-and-over motion to lace the grommets or holes with the drawstring.

5. Step 5: To create the pocket "seams"

   Kids can snip two 5-inch lengths of the double-sided tape. Slip one, vertically inside the pocket flap, about 5 inches from one side of the apron. Repeat for the other pocket, measuring about five inches in from the opposite side of the apron. For the faux stitching, use the green marker to draw two vertical rows of stitches down each pocket "seam."

6. Step 6: Iron-ons

   Using an ink-jet printer and iron-on transfer paper suited for dark fabrics, print out the Wubbzy designs. Iron them onto the apron as shown in the photograph, or apply your own design.

7. Step 7: Get gardening

   Tie the finished apron onto your child and fill up the pockets with child-sized gardening tools and seed packets.
