Materials

  • Last year's children's rain boots
  • Potting soil
  • Pea gravel for drainage
  • Early spring herbs or flowers (suggestions: marigolds, primrose, pansy, basil, parsley, cilantro)
  • "My Wuzzleburg Garden" Tags
  • Scoop or spoon
Tip: Recycle boots that are too small or worn out. They make charming plant containers. Just be sure to hammer nails into the soles before starting so the soil can drain.

Directions

  1. Step 1: Fill the boots (This is a great step for your preschooler to do.)

Get dirty! Let preschoolers scoop gravel and dirt into the boots. Guide them to fill 1/3 of each boot with gravel, followed by another 1/3 of potting soil.

  2. Step 2: Plant the flowers

Gently loosen the plant from its pot and nest it into the top of the boot. Remove or add dirt, as needed, to pack the plant in, leaving about half an inch of space at the top of the boot for easy watering.

  3. Step 3: Label your plant

Print the garden tags, then follow the instructions provided to label each plant.

  4. Step 4: Water and watch grow!

Place your plant in a sunny spot and water as needed, usually three to four times a week. TIP: Kids love to water plants, but sometimes too much. Help your child water the plant the first time to demonstrate how much is enough. You want the plant to be damp, not soaked.

  5. Step 5: Bring outside

Once your local frost date is past, you can bring your plants outside and plant in the ground or a larger planter to encourage healthy growth. Mother nature will most likely take care of more of the watering now.

Tip: Water, but not too often. Drooping leaves will tell you it's time. Help your child water the plant the first time to demonstrate how much is enough. You want the plant to be damp, not soaked.
