This indoor-outdoor zoo, natural history museum, and botanical garden are packed with native birds--and other animals--all within an arm's length. There are over 300 animal species and 1,200 plant species, and the towering, saguaro-studded Tucson Mountains are alive with the yips and yodels of coyotes.

Two walk-in aviaries--one filled with songbirds and one filled with hummingbirds--make spotting even tiny birds a snap.

Children are welcomed on the free, guided bird walks, which are offered at 7:30 a.m. most days. (Tours last from 1 to 1 1/2 hours.) Call for information; schedules vary.

Kids' Days are held on the first and third Sunday of every month. From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., visitors ages 4-10 can take part in hikes, craft projects, wildlife programs, or other special activities (free with admission). Call or check the Web site for more information.

Outdoor exhibits include butterfly and cactus gardens, desert cats, burrowing animals, and prairie dogs; indoor (air-conditioned) exhibits include reptiles, snakes, and Gila monsters. See the indoor exhibits at midday, when the sun is at its hottest.

There are two miles of gentle walking trails with plenty of shaded shelters and water fountains.

There are extensive dining facilities--grill, café, coffee bar, and snack shop--and a gift shop featuring desert and native crafts, minerals, and Southwestern artifacts. Strollers and wheelchairs are free of charge.
