advertisementChildren can experience wild creatures as well as domesticated farm animals at this recently expanded and refurbished sanctuary of the National Audubon Society. New additions include a nature store, six thematic classrooms, a stream tank stocked with marine wildlife, an exhibit hall, and an auditorium. "We try to inspire kids and adults to experience a sense of wonder for the world around them," says Aullwood's education coordinator, Tom Hissong.

advertisementPublic walks take place almost every Saturday and Sunday at 2:30. You'll be guided through the prairie, marvel at spring wildflowers, observe sap being boiled into maple syrup, or become involved in the other great activities for families and kids.
advertisementThe on-site, organic working farm is home to cows, pigs, goats, sheep, and two Belgian draft horses and is a favorite stop for youngsters.
advertisementNearly seven miles of easy trails take visitors through Muskrat Marsh, Bluegill Pond, Wet Woods, and a tall-grass prairie; don't be surprised to see snapping turtles, bullfrogs, white-tail deer, turkey vultures, red-tail hawks, and more than 40 species of butterflies.
