Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch spring-form pan. Prepare the cake mix according to package directions, pour the batter into prepared pans, and smooth the top. Bake until golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean about 25 to 30 minutes. Transfer the cake to a wire rack and cool for 10 minutes. Invert the cake and cool completely.
Step 2
While the cake bakes, place the doughnuts on a wire rack over a sheet pan lined with wax paper. Tint 1/2 cup of the frosting bright blue and place in a glass measuring cup. Microwave until just pourable, about 5 to 10 seconds. Stir well and pour the frosting over the doughnuts to coat evenly. Place a yellow candy in each center. Let set until firm, about 30 minutes.
Step 3
Divide the remaining frosting into two bowls. Tint one pale purple and the other red with the paste food coloring.
Step 4
Trim the top of the cooled cake to make it level. Cut the cake in half and spread 1/2 cup of the purple frosting on the cut sides. Sandwich the two cake halves together to make a semicircle. Trim half an inch off the rounded side so the cake will stand flat. Place the cake on a serving platter, with the trimmed side down and frost the sides purple.
Step 5
Spoon the red frosting into a resealable bag. Snip a small corner from the bag and pipe a horizontal line 2 inches down from the top edge all the way around the cake. Fill in with the remaining red frosting. Spread the red frosting gently to make it smooth on the sides and on top.
Step 6
Insert the round candies along the side of the cake. Add the doughnut wheels at the base of the cake. Using a toothpick, add the spice candies as the engines. Glue the craft sticks together. Print the Fly Boat Template and cut out the emblem and sail. Trace the sail onto lined yyellow paper cut it out. Attach the emblem to the sail and the sail to the mast with sticky tape. Insert the sail into the center of the cake. Sprinkle the remaining round candies around the base of cake.
