Ne'er-do-well Naval Officer Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) is forced to become a leader when aliens threaten to wipe out our entire planet.
Based on the Hasbro board game, this sci-fi action flick is an assault on the senses--and, for tweens, that's likely to be a positive. The movie is very loud and the action is literally and relentlessly explosive. Filled with Transformer-like bad guys, a patriotic "us against them" message and lots of boys--uh, and Rihanna--with their high-tech toys, it won't matter that the movie is way too long, the ending predictable and the dialogue just plain silly. By the end of opening weekend, Hollywood is bound to be cheering, "Hail to the Fleet."
This movie is intended for older children.
This movie is intended for older children.
The movie is way too long for younger children and way too loud for sensitive young ears. Kids in this age group won't care about the love story between Hopper and the Admiral's daughter (Brooklyn Decker). Nine-year-old boys will enjoy the Transformer-like aspects and will get a kick out of the nod to the grid board of the classic game.
Tweens will be blown away by the epic scale of the destruction, especially in Hong Kong, which is hit hard by the aliens. They'll respect the old-school war veterans who return to help defend our country--and our planet--and they'll cheer on Hopper as he rises to every challenge. They, like most viewers, won't understand the point of pop idol Rihanna being cast as a Naval weapons specialist but with the earth in peril it's all hands on deck.
This pack comes with Blu-ray, DVD, digital and Ultraviolet copies of the movie. The DVD includes segments about the cast, preparing for battle, shooting at sea and on the ships. The Blu-ray adds an alternate ending, a VIP tour of the USS Missouri, behind-the-scenes segments and a variety of special features which allow viewers to interact with the onscreen action.
