Action Adventure | Life Lessons
Norwegian ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl and a crew of five men build a raft and set off on a 5,000-mile journey to prove that the original settlers of Polynesia came from South America, not from Asia.

Based on a true story, this adventure has already been covered in an Oscar-winning documentary by Thor Heyerdahl himself, who also wrote about it in a best-selling book that sold more than 50 million copies. Although the actual journey took place in 1947, it's as exciting and relevant today, and will appeal to the explorer--and rebel--in every older tween. It's a classic story of empowerment that kids just may refer to as the little raft that could!

Tweens (10-12)
Maybe Younger children probably won't be interested in the background story, and won't understand why anyone would care where the settlers came from! They will also be horrified by one extraordinarily violent scene in which a crew member kills a whale shark, stabbing it repeatedly, and leaving everything, including one man, totally covered in blood. Older tweens will respect Thor Heyerdahl's determination to prove his theory despite the obstacles and odds, and they will see why he is credited with inspiring a new generation of adventurers after World War II, including the brave astronauts who headed into space.
