Action Adventure | Life Lessons
Young Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma) survives a shipwreck while traveling with his family from India to Canada, and finds himself stranded in a lifeboat with the only other survivor--a ferocious Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.

Director Ang Lee won an Academy Award for this stunning film that is based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel. Visually, it is magnificent and, if you have a 3D TV, that is definitely the way to watch it. Although it's too scary and confusing for younger kids, older tweens will get swept away in the magical adventure and will be awestruck by the majestic Richard Parker. The movie is a beautiful testament to the human spirit and to the power of the stories we tell ourselves in order to survive.

Tweens (10-12)
Maybe Although there are gorgeous scenes that will leave ten-year-olds wide-eyed in wonder, the movie is over two hours long and most of that time, Pi is alone on the boat with Richard Parker--which may not keep their attention, despite the constant tension. The plot requires some pretty deep thinking and suspension of disbelief, and it will give older tweens a lot to talk about afterwards. This is a truly original movie-watching experience, and is as much a triumph of filmmmaking as the story is a triumph of our will to live and love.
