Borrowing a bit from the Prince and the Pauper, the famously finicky feline, Garfield (voiced by Bill Murray), takes an unexpected trip to London, where he's mistaken for a royal cat named Prince.
The fur flies once again in this sequel to the 2004 hit, and young viewers will be eager to follow the adventures of the cantankerous cat on his trip across the ocean. And although he's traded in his beloved lasagna for minced pie (and taken over a castle throne instead of a couch) young fans will agree--Garfield still rules!
This movie is intended for older children.
Younger preschoolers probably won't be able to follow much of the story, which involves a plot by Lord Dargis to get rid of Prince/Garfield in order to inherit the estate. What they will understand--Dargis throws Prince off a bridge and threatens the cats' nine lives--may be upsetting to them. Five-year-olds, though, may enjoy Garfield's crazy antics.
Kids will be happy to see Lord Dargis get what he deserves as he screams, "Your lunatic dog just bit my bottom," and when the animals ask, "What do we do to bullies?" and band together to "kick royal butt." Kids will find it amusing that the animals speak with English accents and they'll laugh out loud when Garfield's canine nemesis, Odie, urinates on a British guard's foot.
Some older tweens will consider the movie too babyish, although they may appreciate some of the pop culture references to movies like Silence of the Lambs and Oliver, and TV shows like The Jeffersons. They'll think it's clever when Garfield says, "I used to be known as Prince," and will probably enjoy his enthusiastic dancing to "Cat Scratch Fever."
