Although kids in this age group don't have to worry about the dynamics of high school yet, many of them will still be hooked by the different characters and the lively musical numbers. They'll be fascinated by Sharpay and Ryan, the obnoxious sister and brother who have always reigned in the school theatrical productions and who try to sabotage Gabriella and Troy. They'll laugh when Sharpay tells an admiring basketball player, "Evaporate, tall person," and they'll love watching the "American Idol"-like auditions. |

Tweens, who just want to fit in, will relate to Gabriella when she says, "I can't have people staring at me." Those who have been considered jocks, brains, or artists and are looking to discard those labels as they approach high school will feel empowered by Troy, who overcomes his fear of being laughed at in order to go for his dream. They'll understand the song sung by the students, "No, no, no, stick to the stuff you know, stick to the status quo," and will be reassured when Gabriella tells Troy, "You're a cool guy, but not for the reasons your friends think." The movie feels a bit like an updated Grease, and although tweens may think it's a little corny, it still hits all the right notes and they just won't be able to resist it. |
