Step Inside the Box with Julius Jr.!
Ask your kids: What makes superheroes special?
If you could be a superhero, what kind of special powers would you have? (Any power is great--giggles, butterflies, invisibility, ice fingers, lion, ninja, silly powers)
Once they have an idea--what kind of superhero pose would you have? What kind of special move could your superhero do? Allow children to play and explore this character.
Does your superhero have a special color or symbol? They may even wish to color a blank piece of paper and attach it to their cape with tape to take on their superhero persona. if you have face paint, they can also paint their face the color(s) of their superhero persona.
What would you do with your powers? Do superheroes help other people? Who would you help?
If you can go outside, go on a superhero walk and collect some small natural material (leaves, grass, rocks) in a plastic bag. What does a superhero think about when they go outside?
Now to the Invention Dimension!
Don't talk too much about superheroes they may recognize or have heard of--encourage them to invent their own! Support your child's superhero choices to make sure your child is comfortable and enjoying the activity. One great way to do this is when the child creates a superhero pose, have everyone else do it too until all kids playing have shown their pose and had the the pose echoed back by the other kids. This helps reinforce that everyone's creative ideas are valued and supported.
What Your Little Ones Are Learning
Imagination and fantasy play are the work of children. Playing and pretending are how they begin to understand concepts such as "good" and" evil." Superhero play in a safe and emotionally secure environment allows children the opportunity to create their own stories as a way of understanding the world around them. This process supports the development of emotional control and critical social skills. Talk to your kids after the exercise and reference their "super powers" in future play times and real-life situations.
Why "Inventing Time" Matters
Creative thinking begins early in every child's life. It enables original thought and the ability to see solutions where others don't. It provides the fundamental building blocks for success in school and beyond. Creative play has been proven across multiple research studies to be the best path to developing a lifelong capacity for creativity.
