Miss Spider is the quintessential mom: warm-hearted, open, and extremely generous. Instead of eating other insects like most Spiders, she chooses to carefully prepare vegetarian meals for her family. For Miss Spider, motherhood is serious business. She diligently tries to administer the right balance of discipline and care to her kids. Knowing firsthand how powerful and transforming the gift of kindness can be, she shares this gift with both her natural and adopted children as well as all those around her.
Squirt's is a kid with a ton of spunk and healthy dose of wide-eyed wonder. He's one in spider years, which is about six in "kid years." Even though he's just a kid, he doesn't let fear keep him down. At his call of "Bugs awaaay!" his little legs are raring to scurry on an adventure. He's a natural born leader with a big heart.
Shimmer is an 8 year old Jewel Beetle. Her iridescent thorax wows other bugs, but she is much more than just a beautiful bug. She is a very strong-willed and resilient kid. As the big sister in her adoptive family she leads the way, relying on special heat sensors in her legs and her unmatched intuition. One of her favorite pastimes is going to the meadow to chow down on a field of flowers.
Wiggle is a very shy six year old. He's a bundle of nerves, who's certain that whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. "We're gonna get caught. We're gonna get caught," is his mantra. Sometimes his overly cautious attitude frustrates the other kids. But when it comes to dreaming up something fun to do, Wiggle is full of imaginative ideas.
At nine years old, Dragon is the oldest of the bug pack and always looking for room to soar. He's an amazing aerialist with the ability to fly forward and backward. He acts and talks tough, never letting anyone forget that he survived in the Snakey Woods all by himself. Although he loves his adoptive parents and siblings, he still is on the lookout for his dragonfly family.
This 7 year old little bed bug is the clown of the pack. He does everything at lightening speed, which means he often acts and speaks before he thinks. He's very forgetful. "Oops. I forgot" is his refrain, but he means well so it's easy to forgive him. Miss Spider is always trying to get him to eat a good meal because he can go days without eating. When he does sit still long enough to eat, he's ravenous and can wolf down everything in sight.
Spinner looks and acts just like his dad Holley. He's innately calm, and most of the time, very levelheaded. He may only be six, but his analytical nature allows him to digest situations and give palatable explanations to his brothers and sisters. Like his dad, Spinner is musically talented. He can accompany Holley on his fiddle. Although Spinner is a serious and introspective kid, he also has a thrill-seeking side to him and loves to spin on his thread till he gets dizzy.
Pansy & Snowdrop
Pansy & Snowdrop are six-year-old twin girls. Although they are one dynamic duo, Pansy wants to be seen as her own spider. Pansy is a tomboy, a natural athlete, and the most coordinated of the bug pack. Where Pansy is all about the physical, Snowdrop is about the cerebral. She is a dreamer, an inventor and a budding scientist. Together, they form one unbeatable pair that are always looking out for each other.
Holley is Miss Spider's mate and the little bugs' Dad. There is not a mean bone in his thorax. Holley rarely loses his patience and has an expansive spirit. At times he's perhaps a little naive and always gives other bugs the
benefit of the doubt. Like Miss Spider, Holley takes parenting very seriously, but he is also a lot of laughs too. He's the sort of Dad who can get down on a kid's level and horse around. He's also a talented musician.
Betty Beetle is Miss Spider's adoptive mom and the kids' grandma. Her manner is staid and sweet, perhaps a little old-fashioned. Like
Miss Spider, Betty takes motherhood and now Grand-motherhood very seriously. She and her son Asparagus, (Gus for short), share a snug little hole just around the tree trunk from the Cozy Hole where Miss Spider, Holley and the kids live. Betty is known around Sunny Patch for her generous spirit and can often be heard saying, "Let's have a cup of tea, and I'm sure things will be all right."
Spiderus is a whiney, conniving, cowardly arachnid. His dastardliness is over the top and completely laughable. He lives with his new wife Spinderella in a crack at the bottom of the Hollow Tree. He's a heckler who taunts and torments everyone with empty threats that he'll eat them up. Even though he would never follow
through with his threats, the kids go to great lengths to sneak by his door without being noticed.
