Homemade Papier-Mache

Use this simple recipe to make all kinds of crafts, like Dora's Sunflower Piñata an Oswald Piñata, or a Rugrats Reptar Piñata.

What You Need
Large bowl
Plastic bag (1 quart or larger)
1 cup flour
2 cups water
Newspapers
Scissors
Balloon

What You Do

Step 1
Line the bowl with the plastic bag and add the flour and water.

Step 2
Help your child mix the flour and water together with a large spoon (or your hands) until it becomes thick and glue-like. To make a larger batch, add more water and flour in a two-to-one ratio.

Step 3
Cut newspapers into 1/2-inch strips. Dip the strips into the papier- mache and pull each one between two fingers to squeeze out the excess liquid. Cover an inflated balloon with the strips. To make a papier-mache bowl, cover half of the balloon. To make a piñata, cover the entire balloon, but leave a 1-inch opening at the top so you can fill it with candy later. After the papier-mache has dried for at least eight hours, pop the balloon.
