What You Need
Small shoebox or cigar box
Paint and paintbrushes
Ribbon
Velcro squares
Glue
Assorted gems, buttons, and stickers

What You Do

Step 1
Cover your work area with craft paper or newspaper.

Step 2
Help kids paint the shoebox inside and out and allow it to dry.

Step 3
Show kids how to glue two ribbons, several inches apart onto the box. Start at the bottom, or back of the box, over the top, and then stop after the ribbon clears the top.

Step 4
Attach Velcro squares to the ribbons and the box so that your child needs to pull it apart to open.

Step 5
Have your child make a map, or use an old one, and glue it to the inside of the top of the box.

Step 6
Now it's time to decorate the box with jewels, stickers, buttons, and whatever else your little pirate desires.
