What You Need
Elastic banding (1-inch or 2-inch width)
Stapler
Canvas waist apron (from a hardware or paint store)
4- by 4-inch leather scrap
Heavy-duty scissors
Fabric glue or hot-glue gun
Paint markers (in several colors, including brown or black)
Pencil (optional)
Toy tools
Toy cell phone

What You Do

Step 1
Make loops on the apron to hold tools by cutting the elastic band into pieces about 3 to 5 inches long. (The exact length of elastic depends on each tool--as a guide, wrap the elastic around each tool first and then cut.) With the stapler, attach the elastic pieces to the apron directly beneath the apron's top trim.

Step 2
To make a leather pocket on the tool belt, cut a 3 1/2-inch square from the leather scrap and run a bead of glue around its edge with fabric glue or hot glue. (Parents will want to handle the hot-glue gun.) Stick the pocket to the apron and press firmly. Show your child how to make a dotted line around the edge of the pocket with a brown or black paint marker to give the appearance of stitching. Add more stitching around the edges of the apron, if desired.

Step 3
Use the paint markers to decorate the tool belt with drawings of tools and to add your child's name. You may want to draw in some of the tools with a pencil and show your child how to trace around the tools and color them in with the paint markers. After the paint has dried, add the tools and a toy cell phone.
