To take pictures with a kid-size SpongeBob, you’ll need an instant camera and a piece of foam, such as a twin-size mattress pad from the camping section of a discount store (usually under $10). Or check an office-supply store for sheets of packing foam. You will also need a roll of brown craft paper or packaging paper and a roll of white paper. Both can be found at office-supply stores. If you cannot find rolls of white paper, you can use colored wrapping paper that is white on the reverse side.

Craft glue
Double-sided poster mounting tape (optional)
Black marker
1 roll white paper
Red, white, and black construction paper
Hook-and-loop (Velcro) strips or ribbons

Step 1
Cut the foam to 21 inches by 60 inches using the heavy-duty scissors. Fold the foam in half lengthwise. Cut a hole large enough for your child’s face about 7 inches below the fold. This is the front of SpongeBob’s body.
Step 2
To make SpongeBob’s square pants, cut a piece of brown craft paper 30 inches by 7 inches. Wrap this sheet around the bottom of the front of SpongeBob’s body and secure it with craft glue. (Gluing tip: If you are using a foam mattress pad with raised ridges, apply the glue to the tops of the ridges and then press the paper down. Double-sided poster mounting tape will also work.) Use a black marker to draw rectangles for SpongeBob’s belt.
Step 3
To make SpongeBob’s shirt, cut a strip of white paper the same size as the brown paper. Glue it just above the brown paper. Use a black marker to draw a collar. Cut out a tie shape from the red construction paper and glue it on.
Step 4
Cut circles from the white paper freehand to make SpongeBob’s eyes. With a marker, draw small circles inside the eyes and smaller circles within them. Glue the eyes above the face hole. Glue the left eye so it slightly overlaps the right. Cut out six rectangles from the black construction paper and glue three above each eye for eyelashes.
Step 5
Cut out a mouth shape from the black construction paper. Glue on two teeth cut from the white paper and a tongue cut from the red construction paper. Use the picture for reference. Glue the mouth underneath the face hole.
Step 6
Attach hook-and-loop straps or ribbon to the foam to tie the two sides of the costume together while it is being worn. Use a stapler to attach the straps or ribbons securely.
Step 7
Cut an extra strip of foam 19 inches by 5 inches and place it inside the costume at the fold. This cushioning will rest on the child's head and allow the face hole to stay in position. The foam should just cling in place with no glue.
Step 8
Take pictures of each child in the costume with an instant camera.
