Three gray whales get trapped under the ice in the Arctic Circle, and people around the world come together in order to save them.
Based on a true story, this whale of a tale is a winner! Although many of the characters are simply composites of stereotypes--the Green Peace activist (Drew Barrymore), the Big Oil tycoon (Ted Danson), the politicians, the Eskimo tribe, the ambitious reporter (Kristen Bell)--it is still touching when they are able to put aside their differences to work together and help these magnificent creatures. This is a great family flick, which has enough warmth to melt even the most solid ice!

This movie is intended for older children.
There's no question viewers of all ages will fall hard for the wondrous whales, but younger children won't be interested in all the politics and self-centeredness and they'll be devastated when (SPOILER ALERT) one of the animals doesn't make it. Older kids will love that the whales are affectionately named Fred, Wilma and Bam Bam, and they'll be on the edge of their seats, cheering on the heroic efforts of the rescuers.
Tweens will be fascinated by the self-serving interests that initially motivate many of the people to get involved in the rescue, and the fact that everyone is able to move past them to focus on the whales. They'll respect the challenges the rescuers must overcome, include working in minus 50 degree temperatures, and they'll be shocked to see a pilot's eye freeze shut and a passenger lick his eye in order to open it! Ultimately, they'll appreciate that every creature is worth saving, and they'll understand why this whale family's plight became a global concern.
