Po (Jack Black), aka The Dragon Warrior, bands together with the Furious Five to stop a formidable villain who wants to take over China and destroy kung fu.
Po is such an irresistible--and unlikely--hero, it's no surprise kids of all ages have fallen in love with him. What is a surprise is that this sequel is actually better than the first movie! Although it's a little more New Age-y, with lots of talk about staying in the present and learning to find inner peace, it's also funnier, more clever, and more meaningful. Will this one match the success of the original? With Po's "awesomeness" stronger than ever, the answer is pretty black and white.
This movie is intended for older children.
Although preschoolers will unquestionably love the big and cuddly Po, there are many scenes they will find disturbing, especially when Po's father falls victim to evil Lord Shen and Po's mother is forced to abandon the baby panda to keep him safe. Five-year-olds will find it hilarious that Po is hungry for justice--and noodles!
Kids will be awestruck by the Furious Five's masterful martial arts moves and the way the team members unconditionally look out for each other. They may be as shocked as Po is to learn he's adopted, and will be fascinated to find out his history and how he came to live with Mr. Ping, the goose.
Although some tweens may believe they've outgrown these animated movies, they'll probably really enjoy this one and can even take their younger siblings along as an excuse to see it! Older kids will get a lot out of the message that, "Even if your story doesn't have a happy beginning, you choose who to be." They'll also find it very empowering when Po tells Shen that scars heal and when Po learns not to concentrate on the past or the future because "the most important thing is now."
The Awesome Pack comes with DVDs of both the movie and Po's new adventure, "Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters." Bonus features include the debut of Nickelodeon's new TV series, "Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness," deleted scenes, panda stories, a game, a "Kickin' It With the Cast" segment and a lesson in speaking and drawing symbols in Chinese.
