With a running time of two hours, the movie is too long for younger children--especially because of all the intense fighting scenes. Kids won't care about the love story between one of the pilots and a young Italian woman, and will find it bizarre that they can have a relationship without even speaking the same language. Older kids will be fascinated by the flying, and hopefully--having grown up with an African-American president--be appalled by the blatant racism. |

Tweens will be shocked by the opening scene which features a 1925 Army War College study stating that African Americans are "subservient, mentally inferior and unfit for combat." They'll cheer on the pilots of the 332nd Fighter Group, and will find it inspiring that they are able to overcome all the obstacles in their way to become highly respected and decorated. They'll understand that, no matter what the circumstances, prejudice just doesn't fly. |
