		Recruited by Gandalf the wizard, Bilbo Baggins sets out on a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. This movie is the first in a new trilogy that takes place 60 years before the blockbuster “The Lord of the Rings” starts--and it's just as epic. Director Peter Jackson has created a stunning Middle Earth with magnificent scenery and creatures that are truly eye-popping, thanks to the 3D technology. Audiences will be thrilled to see their favorite characters back in their younger days, and will be relieved to know that the franchise will live on by going back in time. Speaking of time, the movie is almost three hours long, making it more appropriate for older tweens who are true fans. And, because it's shot at 48 frames per second rather than the standard 24, the camera work may cause headaches or dizziness, making the film--like the journey itself--a bit risky for the faint of heart.

Although there are many comical moments, the movie is very intense and the fighting even more graphic and in-your-face because of the 3D. For older tweens, J.R.R. Tolkien's classic story has many important lessons to impart, including the idea that "simple acts of kindness and love keep evil away," and that it's the "small acts of everyday people" that can change the world. They'll learn the value of trying new things and being open to unexpected adventures, and will find it very empowering when Gandalf says of Bilbo, "He's got a great deal more to offer than anyone knows--including himself."
