Age-By-Age Guide
Animation | Comedy
New toy in town Buzz Lightyear threatens to replace rag doll Woody in the most-cherished spot on young Andy's bed.

Beautifully depicting the answer to every child's question of what the toys do while their owners are away, the movie is a wondrous celebration of childhood that feels as fresh today as it did when it was originally released ten years ago. This is also one of those rare DVDs that parents will enjoy watching with their children over and over again.
Baby (0-2)
No Despite its toy-driven plot, the movie has a number of dark elements that makes it better suited to viewers who are a little older. Andy's neighbor Sid is a bully who burns a hole in Woody's forehead and terrorizes the toys, mutilating them and reassembling their parts in scary-looking ways. Many of these images may be frightening to babies and toddlers.
Preschool (3-5)
Yes Preschoolers will find the colorful computer animation a pleasure to watch, and many of the characters are toys kids will recognize from their own shelves. For children in this age group who have recently become big brothers and sisters, Woody's jealousy toward Buzz is the perfect springboard for a discussion about sibling rivalry and for reassuring little ones that parents' hearts have unlimited space for love. They'll be enthralled by the toys' distinct personalities and will crack up when Sid's little sister brings Buzz to a tea party and dresses him in an apron. They'll appreciate the message that if everyone works together, there's room in the toy box for all. Be aware that they may also be intrigued when Sid plays with matches--a scene you may want to discuss with them.
Kids (6-9)
Yes The clever visual jokes and wordplay will keep older kids giggling, especially when Mr. Potato Head describes his feelings about someone by removing his lips and placing them on his backside, and when Woody says, "Draw" to Etch-a-Sketch, who then proceeds to whip up a picture of a gun on his screen. Unfortunately, girls aren't represented particularly well in the playroom. Flirty Bo Peep is the only female toy, but with her occasional suggestive remarks, she's certainly no role model.
Tweens (10-12)
Maybe Tweens may have fond memories of this classic movie and might even remember having their own Woody doll or Buzz Lightyear figure. Kids in this age group may want to watch some of their favorite scenes one more time.
