At the start of World War I, a horse named Joey is taken from the English boy who raised him and ends up touching the lives of people on both sides of the fight.
Steven Spielberg's epic adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's book (and Tony Award-winning Broadway show) is definitely a horse movie--it's just not one for young kids. Joey is a magnificent creature who brings people together and makes them focus on their similarities rather than their differences, but he--along with many other horses--is treated so poorly in the movie, it's often way too painful to watch. The story itself is powerful but because of the endless fighting and abuse of animals, the question of whether it’s appropriate for children has to be answered with a "nay."
This movie is intended for older children.
This movie is intended for older children.
Joey will appeal to viewers of all ages, which will make it even more difficult for younger children to watch some of the horrific experiences he undergoes. With a running time of over two hours, the movie features long stretches of fighting that are too intense for most kids in this age group.
Older viewers will appreciate Joey's loyalty, tenacity, and compassion. They will love that he brings out the best in so many people, and will be especially struck by a moving scene in No Man's Land in which an English soldier and a German soldier work together on Joey's behalf. They are likely to predict what happens at the end, but that won't stop them from cheering when it does!
The four-disc combo pack comes with Blu-ray, DVD, and digital versions of the movie. The DVD includes "The Look," a segment about the film's design. The Blu-ray adds "making of the movie" segments from Steven Spielberg and "Extra" Martin Dew, as well as featurettes about sound design, editing and scoring, and production.
