Musical | Classic
One of the classic family films of all times, this Best Picture Academy Award winner is a joy to watch even four decades after its original release. Sure, it's a little corny when Maria bursts into song as the hills come alive with the sound of music, but it's still inspiring. The multi-layered plot, based on a true story, deals with everything from family issues to politics and history, offering plenty of food for thought and discussion. Don't be surprised when young viewers join Maria in singing about "My Favorite Things," they add this movie to their list.
Baby (0-2)
No This movie is intended for older children.
Preschool (3-5)
No This movie is intended for older children.
Kids (6-9)
Maybe Although they'll probably find themselves humming some of the famous songs, younger kids in this age group may have trouble following the story and won't be interested enough to sit through almost three hours of it. Older kids, though, will love when Maria gathers all the kids in her bed during a storm and sings to them and may secretly wish they had a governess like her!
Tweens (10-12)
Yes Tweens, especially girls, have probably seen the movie many times before but will be surprised at how much more they get out of it now that they're older. They'll be fascinated by the history lesson it provides, and will admire Captain von Trapp for having the courage to stand up to the Nazis and announce, "Some of us prefer Austrian voices raised in song to ugly German threats." Kids in this age group may relate to the irrepressible Maria. They'll laugh when the nuns can't find her, sighing, "We looked in all the usual places," and Mother Superior answers, "Well, considering it's Maria, perhaps you should look in unusual places." They'll feel empowered when Maria sings "I Have Confidence," and will recognize the fact that she matures during her tenure as governess, ultimately becoming the one who enables the family to escape before the war hits home.
