Age-By-Age Guide
Fantasy/Sci-Fi
Determined to bring back a fallen star for the selfish woman with whom he's besotted, young Tristan enters a magical kingdom where he meets Yvaine (Claire Danes), who literally lights up his life.

This fantasy--and fantastical--film is a total treat for the senses. Filled with swashbucklers, unicorns, royal rubies, and black magic, it's epic, action-packed, and a love story at heart. Based on the popular novel by Neil Gaiman, the movie has the humor and warmth of The Princess Bride and is likely to be a crowd-pleaser for older audiences who can truly appreciate Robert De Niro's unexpected character (no spoilers here!) and Michelle Pfeiffer's wizened old witch. With a running time of more than two hours, this enchanting fairy tale is summer escapism at its best, and just may give tweens a new reason to study the evening sky.

Tweens (10-12)
Maybe Younger kids in this age group may have a hard time following the various plots and probably won't be interested in the love story. Older tweens will love the fantasy aspect and the way spells are cast about and Tristan travels by candlelight. They'll be enchanted with the seven princes who have no qualms about killing each other to become heir to the throne, and who--one by one--form a hilarious panel of ghosts who goad each other on and provide color commentary. Despite its violence and the many characters who are strictly out for themselves, older kids will be glad to see that the movie above all proves that if you wish upon a star, you can still live happily ever after.
