Baby's First Rattle

Print this page
Send to a friend
Here's an easy craft you and your preschooler can make together. Your child can use it as a music maker or give it to the new baby in you house as a rattle. Because babies have a tendency to put things in their mouths, we recommend that you supervise when your baby plays with the rattle. For other music crafts, go to Homemade Music Makers.

What You Need
Film container
Beans, seeds, rice, paper clips, or other noisy objects
Duct tape or glue
Contact paper
Small paintbrushes
Non-toxic paint
Stickers

What You Do

Step 1
Find a film container that your infant will be able to grasp.

Step 2
Clean the container out thoroughly with soap and hot water.

Step 3
Let your child fill the container with different objects that make noise: beans, seeds, rice, or paper clips. Try different objects to experiment with the different sounds the various objects produce.

Step 4
Put the lid on securely. You can use some duct tape or glue to ensure the top does not come off. This is a job for you.

Step 5
Let your child decorate the rattle with colorful contact paper, non-toxic paints, or stickers.
