Thinking of getting a cell phone for your child? Here are 10 features of kids' cell phones you may want to think about.
#1 Pre-Programmed Phone Numbers
Cell phones designed for young children often have preprogrammed speed-dial keys instead of a traditional numbered keypad. You can preset the speed-dial keys either in the phone or using an online interface so your child can call just mom, dad, grandma, or an emergency number.
#2 Call Screening
To prevent your child from getting calls from strangers, some phones offer an unknown-caller blocking feature or other call-screening features.
#3 Custom Skins
Kids like to personalize their things, and cell phones are no exception! Many kids' phones come with stickers or other cool embellishments. The Firefly phone allows kids to design their own phone skins online (for a cost).
#4 Games
Unlike grown-ups phones, most phones for kids cannot download games, but most come with a few preloaded games. They're a good idea for long car trips, waiting rooms, and other occasions when kids need to sit still. (The TicTalk phone comes preloaded with educational LeapFrog games.)
#5 GPS
Want the peace of mind of knowing where your child is at every moment? Ask about a phone with a built in GPS.
#6 Lanyard or Clip
Phones are not toys, and they're not cheap, so every child's phone should come with some sort of device to help keep kids from losing it: a lanyard, a clip, or a drawstring back that attaches to a backpack.
#7 Ringtones
Like games, most kids' phones come preloaded with ringtones. (The TicTalk phone allows kids to record their own ringtones.) Regardless, young kids may enjoy designating a specific ringtone for each caller.
#8 Prepaid Plan
For very young kids this may be less of a concern, but as your child gets older, a pre-paid plan will give you control over how long your child talks on the phone. Some kids' phones allow parents to add hours as a reward. Doing so may help introduce your kids to the idea of being responsible phone users.
#9 Set "On/Off" Times When Phone Can Be Used
Some phones can be set by the parent so they work only during certain hours, such as during school hours.
#10 Headset or Speakerphone
Consider a phone that can accommodate a headset or has a speakerphone option, so kids can keep their hands free.
