12 baked and cooled cupcakes in your child's favorite flavor
1/4 cup white chocolate chips
2 tbsp. pink decorating sugar
12 thin chocolate cookies, such as Famous Chocolate Wafers
1 can (16 oz.) vanilla frosting
Blue food coloring
6 yellow fruit chews, such as Starburst
12 mini marshmallows
1 tube brown decorating frosting
Step 1
Make a dozen cupcakes in your child's favorite flavor. Let cool.
Step 2
Cover a sheet pan with a piece of wax paper. Place the white chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat on high for about 30 seconds, stirring every 10 seconds until smooth. Spoon the melted chocolate into a resealable bag. Snip a very small corner from the bag and pipe a pair of bird feet (as shown in picture) on the wax paper. While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle with the pink sugar. Repeat to get 12 pairs of feet. Place in the refrigerator until set, about 5 minutes.
Step 3
Cut the cookies in half with a serrated knife. Tint the vanilla frosting bright blue with the food coloring. Spoon the blue frosting into two resealable bags and snip a small corner from them. Squeeze a small amount of frosting on top of each cupcake and arrange the cookie halves, rounded side down, as the wings. Pipe lines of frosting over the cookie halves to cover. Pipe concentric circles of the blue frosting to cover each cupcake.
Step 4
Cut the yellow fruit chews in half on a diagonal to create triangles. Place one triangle in the center of the top of each cupcake to form the beak. Cut the marshmallows in half and place two halves above the beak to form the eyes. Pipe a thin line of brown frosting on top of the marshmallows to fill in the eyes. Insert two feet at the bottom edge of the cupcakes.
