What You Need
2 cups flour
2 cups water
Newspaper strips
Large balloon, inflated
Washable yellow tempera paint
Paintbrushes
Wrapped candies or trinkets
String
Yellow and black construction paper
Scissors
Glue
Decorated piata stick (optional)

What You Do

Step 1
Mix equal parts flour and water until the mixture is the consistency of glue. Dip newspaper strips into the mixture one piece at a time, pulling each strip gently between your fingers to remove excess. Wrap strips around the inflated balloon until the balloon is completely covered except for a 1-inch area around the knot of the balloon. Allow to dry overnight.

Step 2
When it is dry, pop the balloon and draw it out through the opening you've left. Paint the balloon shape yellow and allow it to dry.

Step 3
When the paint is dry, fill the shape with small wrapped candies or trinkets. Wrap string around it as if you were tying a package. Make sure the opening is at the top and leave a long piece of string for hanging your piñata. Make an X-shaped cut at the bottom of the piñata to make it easier to break.

Step 4
From the black construction paper, cut a circle about 4 to 5 inches in diameter. From the yellow construction paper, cut sunflower petals.

Step 5
Glue the construction paper petals around the circle to create a sunflower. When it's dry, glue the flower to the sides of the piñata.

Step 6
At the party, let kids try to break the piñata with a small baseball bat or a decorated piñata stick (available at party stores). Put a grown-up in charge of making sure all the children are well out of the way of the swinging bat!
