Top off your homemade cake with these swim-sational Molly and Gil toppers!
All new adventures 1/22-1/25 @ 11am on Nick
Tint 1 cup of the vanilla frosting green. Spoon the green frosting into a pastry bag fitted with a leaf tip. Spoon 2 tablespoons of the remaining vanilla frosting into a plastic resealable bag. Tint the remaining vanilla frosting neon blue. Make sure not to over blend the blue frosting to achieve the streaks.
Trim the top of the cakes with a large serrated knife to level the surface. Place one cake layer on a serving platter. Spread 1/2 cup of the blue frosting on top of the cake. Place the other cake layer, trimmed side down on top of the frosting. Spread the remaining blue frosting all over the cake and make smooth.
Using the additional photos as a guide, pipe wavy lines of green frosting from the bottom edge of cake, up the sides, to look like seaweed. Continue to go all around the base of the cake.
Add the Gil and Molly cake toppers (recipe follows). Snip a small corner from the bag with the vanilla frosting. Pipe small dots of frosting to look like bubbles near the cake toppers and around the side of the cake.
Divide the fondant into 5 equal pieces (see printable templates). Keep the unused pieces of fondant covered at all times to prevent drying out. Tint one part pink for Molly's hair and mouth. Tint one part bright blue for Gil's hair (don't knead it all the way to get streaks). Tint one part beige with the yellow food coloring and some cocoa powder for Molly's skin. Snip a small piece of the beige fondant and add more cocoa powder for her eyes. Tint another piece of fondant pale yellow—add yellow and a touch of red food coloring for Gil's skin.
Divide the remaining piece of fondant into thirds. Leave one part white. Tint another piece light blue, leaving some streaks of color for Molly's suit and Gil's eyes. Tint the remaining piece a variety of dark and light greens for Gil's suit.
Roll each color fondant on a piece of wax paper dusted with cornstarch to prevent sticking. Keep them covered to prevent drying. Use the template pieces and a small knife to cut out the patterns. Add the small details like hair, ears and belly buttons with a toothpick. Layer the pieces together using a small dot of water to secure. Store the toppers in an airtight container until ready to use. These can be made up to 1 week in advance.
